We have a problem in the leadership and coaching space.
A lot of what is sold as “impact,” “executive presence,” or “influence” training is not presence at all.
It is charisma training.
And the difference is neurological. Psychological. Ethical.

Charismatic communication activates emotional contagion, dopamine, group synchronization.
People feel energized. Moved. Mobilized.
But:
Arousal is not safety.
Excitement is not trust.
Charisma creates activation.
It does not necessarily create capacity.

Embodied presence has a different footprint:
Less ego-driven signaling.
More nervous system regulation.
Capacity to stay connected under pressure.
In their field, people don’t spike.
They settle.
And settled humans think more clearly, disagree more honestly, and act more responsibly.
That is not motivational.
That is developmental.

Charisma-dominant leadership often serves an unconscious function:
Regulating the leader’s inner insecurity.
Impact becomes a way to stabilize identity, avoid inner emptiness, and control the field.
Followers feel inspired - but also subtly dependent.
Presence-based leadership comes from a different place:
The leader is not using the room to feel whole.
Influence arises from contact with reality, not from the need to be someone.

We are mass-producing charisma.
“Learn to command a room.”
“Train your impact.”
“Master your presence.”
What is often taught is stronger signaling, persuasion, performance.
You can scale charisma.
You cannot fake presence.
Charisma without inner integration leads to dependency, polarization, and cultures orbiting personalities instead of principles.
Presence does not scale the leader.
It scales the people around them.
Charisma says: 𝘍𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘦.
Presence says: 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥.
And here is the part we forget:
A present leader brings
- stability in uncertainty,
- clarity without aggression,
- strength without domination,
- depth without drama.
They don’t just move people.
They make people more whole.
That is something charisma can never manufacture.
And it is exactly what humans - and this world - need now.
