Why insight isnโ€™t transformation โ€” and how unconscious patterns keep running even the most accomplished executives.

Age Doesnโ€™t Make You Wise. It Makes Your Patterns Harder to Escape.

Iโ€™m saying this plainly because I see it far too often in my work with senior executives.

Brilliant people.
Highly accomplished.
Convinced they are already โ€œdeeply developedโ€.

And yet many are ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง ๐›๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐š๐ฆ๐ž ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐œ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐ฌ they had years - sometimes decades - ago.
The blind spot is massive.

What I encounter is rarely a lack of intelligence or reflection.
Itโ€™s something more subtle and more dangerous:

Leaders who speak fluently about purpose, mindfulness, even shadow work,
while their leadership is still driven by
control disguised as clarity,
dominance disguised as decisiveness,
distance disguised as calm.

The pattern hasnโ€™t changed.
Only the story about it has.

Developmental science is very clear.
Research on adult development (e.g. ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต ๐˜’๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ) shows that ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐š๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ง๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ข๐ง๐ง๐ž๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ก ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ .

They gain experience.
They gain authority.
But their inner operating system stays the same.

More power - not more freedom.
More responsibility - not more perspective.

Midlife is not a natural upgrade.
As ๐˜Š. ๐˜Ž. ๐˜‘๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ already pointed out, it is a crisis of identity.

When status and achievement lose their grip, the ego doesnโ€™t soften by default.
Without conscious shadow work, it tightens.

Control increases.
Certainty hardens.
Ambiguity tolerance shrinks.

What leaders call โ€œmaturityโ€ often looks like ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐š๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ.

Long-term studies, including the Harvard research led by ๐˜Ž๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต, show:

Thatโ€™s why one sentence worries me more than most:

โ€œIโ€™ve already done my inner work.โ€

No, youโ€™ve understood it conceptually.

It confronts control, fear of irrelevance, dependency on admiration.

So the real question for senior leaders is not:
How experienced am I?

But:

And if youโ€™re a seasoned leader and feel thereโ€™s more - more depth, more freedom, more truth -
then reach out.

Thatโ€™s where the real work begins.
